Medlar season’s bounty

A tale of many medlars. Each year for decades now, our friend Kaye gives us her tree’s entire crop of fruit.

Sometimes the yield is small due to inclement weather or the ravages of possums.

Not so this year! Friends Lizzie and Nina can be seen here gathering this season’s bounty a couple of days ago.

The medlars are now home with us, all 10 boxes of them, quietly bletting on straw in the shed.

In a few weeks’ time they will be at the perfect stage to make specialty of our house – medlar liqueur!

Gosh, harvesting medlars in June. We harvested our tree at the end of october in Yorkshire, UK. Its only a young tree so we only obtained 1.5 Kg. They look like russett apples rather than orange or reddy like yours. We need another week of bletting but have them in our kitchen warmth. We are going to make liqueur this year, as i scoffed them from the fruit the year before last and last year i forgot about them because I only had a handful .
