Peaches and Blackberries, fruits of early autumn

A little bit of this, a little bit of that makes a Wednesday morning tea offering come together.

Today, a peach and blackberry shortcake – peaches from a friend’s tree and blackberries picked yesterday down by a nearby creek.

Of course not all peaches are the same size and certainly (I found) blackberries have a mind of their own as to where they want to settle on the cake, so the top looks a bit higgeldy piggeldy both before and after baking.

A stray half a lemon made a nice drizzling icing to go over the top, which made it much more respectable I think, and added to the flavour.

(It started out as a variation on the recipe for Apricot and Blueberry Tray Bake in “The Comfort Bake”).

The remaining 6kg blackberries (picked by husband, certainly not me) will be made into blackberry nip and blackberry jelly, and the peaches (two crates of them) will be sliced and bottled (preserved) tomorrow. The slices will be perfect for baking cakes and puddings throughout the year.
